KENANSVILLE (July 16, 2026) – Through our continuing partnership with North Carolina’s community colleges, we’re showcasing outstanding programs that prepare students for high-demand, well-paying careers—without the need for a four-year degree. This installment highlights the lineworker program at James Sprunt Community College.
Interested in a career in the power distribution and transmission industry? James Sprunt Community College can prepare you via their electrical lineman course, which provides the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed for entry-level employment. Covering topics such as electrical theory, line construction and maintenance, utility equipment operation, pole climbing techniques, safety procedures, workplace communication and industry regulations. JSCC’s course emphasizes safe work practices, hands-on training and physical readiness required for work in the electric utility field.
“Lineworkers are always in demand,” explains Wayne Moore, who teaches in the electrical lineworking program at JSCC.
In fact, demand for linemen is expected to climb by 8.5% by the year 2028 according to labor statistics. And it is estimated there will be 21,800 lineman job openings in 2026 alone.
With the ability to do basic builds, as well as training transformers to practice underground set ups, James Sprunt’s program offers an opportunity to learn all facets required for the field. Today, the demand for lineman extends beyond traditional utility work. Lineman are needed in wildfire recovery efforts, large-scale infrastructure projects and emerging industries, as well.
James Sprunt’s program makes it easy for you to learn while you work, with classes on Friday evening and during the day Saturday and Sunday. The 14-week course costs less than $200.
“There’s a lot of money to be made,” Moore adds, thanks to the high demand for lineworkers, which he sees only increasing in coming years thanks to the growing need for energy.
